Addressing Food Security
in our Community
Food security refers to the availability of sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet the dietary needs of individuals and populations. Food security is a complex and multi-faceted issue, encompassing various aspects such as food production, distribution, access, and utilization.
Food security is considered to be achieved when all people at all times have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.
Food insecurity, on the other hand, is the opposite of food security and refers to the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Food insecurity can result from a variety of factors, including poverty, lack of infrastructure and distribution systems, natural disasters, conflict, and other crises.
Addressing food security is an important global challenge, as it is essential for the well-being of individuals, communities, and nations. Improving food security requires a coordinated and sustained effort across multiple sectors, including agriculture, nutrition, health, and trade, among others.
Brown Box
The Brown Box program was created at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to help those in need. The organization recognized that many families were struggling with their finances and they wanted to help them out. By providing food assistance, they could ensure that their community members would have access to nutritious meals.
Each week, registered participants of the service received a box filled with breakfast. Lunch & snack items for children to take to school.
The box was shipped to the recipient’s home and delivered to the door. Each box contained a variety of items such as: a loaf of bread, peanut butter and jelly, juice boxes and more!
The Brown Box program was originally created for children and their families, but over time it expanded to community members as well.
Margaret's Kitchen
Margaret’s Kitchen was founded in 1998 when the members of our community were struggling to get by. As a non-profit, we sought to address social isolation by bringing people together for a meal. Over the past 24 years, Margaret’s Kitchen has evolved into a model that addresses the complex issues of poverty and hunger by empowering marginalized Montrealers to improve their own lives. Margaret’s Kitchen is run by volunteers from all walks of life who want to make a difference in their community. Our volunteers are given training on how best to interact with those who come through our doors, and how best to support them in their own pursuit of self-sufficiency.
